A lasting commitment

The Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies emerged from a question: How could the university harness and amplify the power of its globally recognized faculty, research centers and community partnerships to address the persistent, complex challenges caused by racial and ethnic injustice and inequality?

The institute favors solutions over academic business as usual. Rather than solely focusing on diagnosing problems, we help people navigate a diverse world — from massive global challenges like climate change and the health of democracies to everyday experiences in the classroom, at the doctor, or with the police.

At a time when many institutions are disinvesting in programs and scholarship related to race and ethnicity, Stanford is instead making a lasting commitment — elevating the university’s deepening work in this space to institute status, one of the highest levels of resourcing and cross-disciplinary focus.
