Faculty leadership

The faculty-led Framework Task Force to Recommend New Infrastructure for the Study of Race and the Impacts of Race on Society convened in October 2020.

The group’s final report, issued in spring 2021, envisioned bringing together the expertise and energy of faculty from across Stanford’s seven schools to work together to drive impactful research on race and ethnicity. In winter 2022, Stanford announced the founding of the institute, naming Brian Lowery and Tomás Jiménez its first co-directors.

This institute will foster new efforts, especially those that have a solution-oriented engagement with local communities and the broader society, which is a Stanford tradition. There is no other institute of this kind nationwide, and it positions Stanford to become a true leader in this area.
